2009 Nieman Conference on Narrative Journalism: Telling True Stories in Turbulent Times

January 22, 2009 by: eventarcade

The conference offers three days of talks, panels, and workshops taught by leading practitioners in the field. Our theme, Telling True Stories in Turbulent Times, signals the urgency for journalists from all platforms to connect with each other through work and reaffirm a devotion to excellence. At the Nieman conference, such connections become even stronger as narrative journalists receive the attention, nurturance, and celebration they deserve.

Sessions will cover the “new” rules of online journalism, narrative techniques to make nonfiction read like fiction, and methods to cultivate the writer’s voice. Master classes and workshops will allow writers to work the craft under the tutelage of the profession’s best. Among our speakers and teachers are:

  • Jon Lee Anderson, The New Yorker
  • Maria Carrillo, The Virginian-Pilot
  • Maureen Corrigan, National Public Radio
  • Tom French, Indiana University School of Journalism
  • Larry Habegger, Travelers’ Tales Books
  • Constance Hale, author of Sin and Syntax
  • Laurie Hertzel, The Minneapolis Star-Tribune
  • Adam Hochschild, author of King Leopold’s Ghost
  • Gwen Ifill, moderator of PBS’ Washington Week and author of The Breakthrough
  • Andrew Lam, Pacific News Service
  • Ann Powers, The Los Angeles Times
  • Mara Schiavocampo, NBC Nightly News
