This page is intended to help you decide whether or not to attend the 3-day Conscious Growth Workshop in Las Vegas. I’m not going to use any silly sales techniques or try to manipulate your emotions in order to persuade you to register. I’ll simply explain what the workshop is about and what you can expect if you show up. Then you can decide whether or not it will benefit you to attend.

What Is the Conscious Growth Workshop?

The Conscious Growth Workshop is a hardcore 3-day personal development seminar. Its primary purpose is to accelerate your conscious growth across all areas of your life — career, finances, health, relationships, and more. The workshop content is loosely based on material from my book Personal Development for Smart People. If you’ve read the book, you’ll surely notice some overlap, but the workshop format is a more powerful and immersive way to create breakthroughs. The book was designed to be read. The workshop is designed to be experienced.

The overall outline of the workshop will be similar to the book’s table of contents. However, whereas the book was split roughly 50-50 between abstract principles and practical application, the workshop places more emphasis on the real-world application side. About 1/3 of the workshop will cover high-level principles of growth, and the remaining 2/3 will delve into the practical application.

The Conscious Growth Workshop is structured in a top-down manner. We’ll start out very high level on Day 1, and on Days 2 and 3 we’ll drill down to the level of practical application and real-world problem-solving.

On Day 1 (Friday), we’ll cover what it means to grow as a conscious human being. We’ll explore the 7 principles of personal growth in great depth. These principles are Truth, Love, Power, Oneness, Authority, Courage, and Intelligence. We’ll do some fun experiential exercises along the way, so you’ll have the opportunity to see each principle in action. This immersive aspect is something I can’t provide in a book. It’s one thing to read about the principles, but it’s much easier to understand them once you see them in action.

On the remaining two days (Saturday and Sunday), we’ll dive deeply into how to apply the 7 principles to create breakthrough experiences in any area of your life. Specifically we’re going to cover career, finances, health and energy, mental development, habits (daily behaviors, patterns, addictions, productivity), emotions, social development and relationships, and spirituality. Although we’ll cover a great variety of topics (really all the major areas where you can grow as a human being), the groundwork laid on Day 1 will give us the means to explore them effectively without getting overwhelmed.

Think of it like this. Suppose I wanted to teach you how to become a great athlete, but I don’t know what sport you’ll be playing. I can’t just dive in and teach you how to dribble a basketball because that skill may be irrelevant for you. Initially I’d have to start out very general. I’d teach you the most fundamental, universally applicable principles of fitness, training, and performance — ideas you could apply no matter what sport you played. Then once you understand those core principles, I could show you how to apply them to various individual sports, so you could use them in real-world situations. Then you’d have the ability to apply them even to sports I didn’t specifically cover. That’s essentially how this workshop is structured. I may not know what specific problems and challenges you’re dealing with right now — every situation is unique — but I can teach you the high level principles of conscious growth and show you how to apply them to a wide variety of real world situations (career problems, relationship problems, financial problems, etc). Then you’ll have the ability to deal with any specific challenges you’re facing today or that you will face in the future. This workshop is all about the fundamentals.

This is very deep, holistic, and personal workshop. Depending on what kind of baggage you arrive with, it may involve a lot of mental and emotional processing. My goal is to create significant shifts in your thinking and your perspectives, shifts that help you grow as a conscious human being.

I’m not going to waste your time with rah-rah fluff that pumps you up emotionally and then leaves you feeling empty two weeks later. Rest assured we won’t be blasting rock music and dancing on our chairs. This workshop isn’t designed to induce false “breakthroughs” by building your stress and then releasing it.

You may find parts of this workshop difficult, not physically but perhaps mentally and emotionally. I will challenge your assumptions and beliefs and encourage you to consider other perspectives. This may bring you face-to-face with some unpleasant parts of yourself that you’ve been suppressing or denying. For example, you may discover that you’ve been clinging to the wrong career path or that your long-term relationship really needs to end in order for you to progress. When you become consciously aware of a new and more empowering path than the one you’ve been following, you may feel very unsettled at first. This is to be expected, and I’ll do my best to help guide you through it. I’ve been through many similar experiences myself, and I know they’re not always easy.

You won’t be subjected to 3 days of solid lecture. The benefit of a live workshop is that we can do things together that you can’t get from a book, audio program, or video. This workshop will include many experiential components. I’m aiming for a good balance of left-brained and right-brained activities. I must admit that designing original exercises is a lot of fun for me creatively, perhaps due to my past life as a game designer.

This isn’t a teaser workshop intended to upsell you on something with a bigger price tag. I’ll be sharing the very best material I know in a form that’s as complete and comprehensive as I can manage in the 3 days we’ll have together. I’d never subject you to any form of bait-and-switch.

The workshop hours will be reasonable, so you won’t be pushed to the point of exhaustion. We’ll start at 9am each morning and go until 5pm on Fri and Sat and until 3:30pm on Sunday. We end earlier on Sunday so people have extra time to fly home that evening if they need to return to work on Monday. Feel free to enjoy Las Vegas in the evenings if you so desire. Our workshop location is right on the Strip, so there are plenty of interesting things to do and see within easy walking distance.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is for people who are committed to conscious personal growth. Such people already “get” the point of personal development and don’t need to be sold on why it’s a good idea. These people are looking to improve their lives across the board. They seek fulfilling career options, loving and compatible relationships, physical and mental energy and vitality, financial abundance, empowering habits, spiritual awareness, inner peace, and greater happiness and well-being.

This workshop isn’t for everyone. This is not a cheesy mass-market seminar designed for the lowest common denominator. My goal isn’t to maximize the number of registrations.

My primary goal is to achieve a certain depth of impact in helping attendees live more conscious and fulfilling lives. For various reasons this isn’t something I’m currently capable of pulling off with the “average” person. This is, however, something I feel confident in achieving with people who are ready for it, i.e. people who’ve made a real commitment to personal growth.

This workshop is for people of above-average intelligence. I’m not referring to IQ here. By intelligence I really mean self-awareness.

Do you have a strong sense of yourself as a conscious human being? Or do you merely go through the motions each day without ever questioning your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors? Self-aware people tend be very curious. They ask a lot of questions. They wonder — about their lives, about their potential, and about meaning and purpose.

I’d rather share this workshop with a group of 20 self-aware people than with 200 average people. I’m not saying that to be derogatory. The simple truth is that the average person hasn’t yet made a serious commitment to personal growth. Most people are still in the unconscious growth stage. They aren’t ready to take full responsibility for their lives. They do attract growth experiences, but they aren’t able to direct the process consciously, so growth is something that happens to them rather than as a result of their conscious intentions. Such people often live in victim mode, blaming external factors for their circumstances. I’m not interested in doing a workshop for a group of victims at this time. I’ll present the material as simply and directly as possible, but I’m not going to dumb down the truth just to make it more marketable to a mass audience.

If you’ve spent any length of time considering questions like Why am I here? and How shall I live in order to be happy? then you’ll probably be a perfect match for this workshop.

If you have very strict religious or philosophical beliefs and you have no desire to see those beliefs challenged, I’d recommend against attending. It’s important that you be open to exploring and considering new perspectives across the board, and that includes the potential for spiritual growth. I’m not going to be preaching any particular philosophy, but I will challenge you to re-examine your spiritual beliefs (and many other beliefs), so if having your beliefs challenged is totally off limits for you, please don’t attend. I have no desire to be stoned to death.

In general, the more rigid your beliefs are and the less open-minded you are with respect to considering alternative perspectives, the less you’ll gain from this workshop. Open-mindedness is necessary for conscious growth. If you don’t think you can come to the workshop with an open mind (ideally with an open heart too), it would be best to hold off.

Lastly, I’m going to ask that you trust me if you decide to attend. This doesn’t mean that you have to agree with everything I’ve written or said. If we saw eye-to-eye on everything, we wouldn’t be able to create growth opportunities for each other. But if for some reason you have doubts about my motives or my integrity, please stay home. During the workshop I’ll be guiding you through various exercises. If you show up feeling resistant, you won’t be fully present, and that will limit the benefits you’ll receive. I won’t be doing anything that would override your free will — no group hypnosis or mental programming or anything like that — but I need your implicit consent to let me throw some challenges your way, and all I ask is that you do your best to face them. You’re always free to analyze your workshop experience with a skeptical eye when the weekend is over, but if you want to get the most value out of it, it’s important that you allow me to play the role of trusted guide during our time together. Do you think you can do that?

What’s Special About This Workshop?

It would be foolish of me to suggest that the Conscious Growth Workshop is the only personal growth workshop you should ever attend. On the contrary, I recommend that you attend workshops and seminars regularly to the degree you can afford them, especially if you enjoy them as much as I do. I’ve attended many workshops, seminars, and conferences over the years, and I found the vast majority of them to be highly beneficial and a good value for the money. Every once in a while I encounter a bad presenter or someone who’s a bit upsell-crazy, but overall most workshop presenters seem to have a lot of value to share. That’s generally why they do workshops.

That said, let me share some specific expectations for this workshop as compared to others you may have attended. This should help you decide if this particular workshop will be a good value for you.

First off, I love to pack in the content. In the world of public speaking, I’m known as a content speaker. Don’t expect me to be a glitzy or flashy presenter. My strength is my material, not my stage antics. I know how to speak well, and I’ve had plenty of experience in front of live audiences, but I’ve never been interested in polishing my gestures or filling my Power Point slides with cheesy clip art. (I don’t plan to use Power Point at all for this workshop.) I’d rather connect with you like a real human being, not a stage performer. If you want to see a performance, there are plenty of amazing shows in Vegas you can see while you’re in town. My goal is to help you achieve meaningful breakthroughs, not to rile you up with shallow entertainment and motivational sound bites.

You can expect an abundance of strong, thought-provoking work throughout the entire 3 days. We’re going to go really, really deep. I’m not going to waste your time with rah-rah fluff and pointless busywork. I won’t have you slapping your chest and doing goofy affirmations. If that sort of thing appeals to you, feel free to let loose at any of the Vegas night clubs after the workshop. The workshop itself will challenge you enough that you won’t be bored. Over-engineering the presentation would only be a distraction from the inner work you’ll be doing.

This isn’t the kind of workshop where I overload you with a ton of tactical how-to material, you take pages and pages of notes, and then you hopefully implement some of it when you return home. This workshop is designed to give you many mental and emotional shifts — those wonderful “a-ha” moments — right there during our 3 days together. There will be some changes that take longer to integrate, but you should be leaving on Sunday feeling that you’ve already experienced significant mental and emotional shifts.

Have you ever experienced one of those a-ha moments while reading one of my articles or listening to one of my podcasts? I’ve received thousands of thank-you messages from people who’ve had such experiences. But I’ve always known that blogging wasn’t the best medium for this kind of work. It allows me to reach an enormous number of people worldwide very efficiently, but a website is still limited in what it can convey. With a live workshop, we have many more options for encouraging these shifts. There’s just no substitute for face-to-face interaction.

My goal for this workshop is to help guide you through the most important shifts I know. First, we’ll take a day to set up the high-level model that enables us to create these shifts. And then on Days 2 and 3, it’s all about creating specific shifts in each area of your life — career, finances, health, relationships, and more.

At one point in my life I was broke and deep in debt. I couldn’t seem to make much money no matter how hard I worked. I ended up going bankrupt in my 20s. Today I’m enjoying a financially abundant lifestyle, and it takes little effort to maintain. Most days I simply do what I naturally enjoy doing — working on personal growth and sharing what I learn with others. Was it just a matter of pushing myself and persisting? No. The main thing that held me back was that I had the wrong perspective all along. I was looking at reality through a disempowering lens, and it was crippling my results. It didn’t matter how hard I worked because I was out of sync with reality, but at the time I had no idea that this was the real problem. I went broke working very long hours and sometimes sleeping at the office.

I eventually experienced some crucial shifts that allowed me to see reality from other perspectives. One day something just clicked, and I saw everything differently. New perspectives gave rise to new thoughts, actions, and habits, which led to new results. I saw solutions that were invisible to me before. I work at a relaxed pace that feels right to me, I get to do what I love, and I earn more income than ever and enjoy a better lifestyle. If I can help you experience shifts like these during our 3 days together, we may be able to shave years off your learning curve. I’d love to help you bypass the many difficult years I had to endure and fast-forward to the good parts. You could say that one reason I love to share my growth lessons with others is that it helps me find meaning in the most frustrating parts of my past.

Another powerful shift happened in my career. I went from running a computer games business that was profitable but unfulfilling, feeling stuck there for years, to quickly starting a new personal development business from scratch. That was a shift I gained from seeing Dr. Wayne Dyer speak. I was ready, and seeing him speak for 3 hours was enough to push me over the edge. What if I never attended that lecture? I probably would have shifted eventually, but it could have been delayed by years.

I don’t claim to be perfect. I don’t seek to be your guru. However, I do have a great deal of experience in helping people achieve powerful, positive shifts in their lives. I’m a guy who’s still learning and growing just as you are, and in that capacity I’d love to serve as your friend and guide. I strongly believe I can help you experience some beneficial shifts in just 3 days that will help you take your life in an even better direction than you’re experiencing right now. I’d love to help you in ways that others have helped me over the years. I believe I can save you a great deal of time and frustration and help you solve your most challenging problems.

I can’t guarantee you will get every shift I attempt to guide you through. Partly this depends on you and whether or not you’re close enough to the threshold to be ready for each one. Most likely there are some shifts you’ll be ready for and others you won’t. Some shifts you may have already integrated, so you’ll find yourself nodding along with me at some points. That’s to be expected. Even if you only experience one key shift out of the entire workshop and the others miss you, I’m sure it will be well worth your time and money to attend.

Throughout the workshop I’ll be giving you some unique “homework” assignments to help you integrate what you’re learning. You’ll be doing these exercises outside the workshop hours. These will be short, simple exercises that will only take minutes to complete, so they won’t interfere with your evening plans. We’re going to take advantage of the Las Vegas venue to give you some unique growth experiences.

What Will You Learn?

Here are the key topics that we’ll cover during the workshop:

Day 1

Core principles of growth – What are the fundamental principles of growth, and how do they work? What does it mean to grow as a conscious human being? How can you be certain you’re growing in a positive direction?

Day 3

Social life and relationships – Cultivating empowering relationships. Letting go with love. Friends. Family. Romantic partners. Attraction.

Spirituality – What is the meaning of life? Why are we here? What is the nature of this reality? Facing and accepting death. Creating a spiritual practice that’s right for you.

Obviously we’re going to cover a lot of ground. How can we squeeze in this much material and still do it justice? We’ll be able to do it because of the structure we create on Day 1. Once we get the strategic level right, the tactical level will be much easier to address. Additionally, I like to move at a good clip. I’m not a slow talker.

When you really understand the principles of growth and how to apply them, you’ll be able to use them to cut through the clutter and solve problems simply and directly in any area of your life.

Too often people try to improve their lives by learning lots of low-level tactics. For example, someone might read time management books and articles to improve their productivity. Sometimes that helps, but most people (even very intelligent, committed people) get weak results with this approach. Why? Because at the higher strategic level, they’re stuck doing work that doesn’t inspire them, so procrastination is a constant struggle. When they shift to more inspiring work, procrastination becomes less of a problem, so the tactical level gets a lot easier. Yet most people would rather keep reading time management tips because it seems easier than facing the fears that prevent them from fixing the high-level problems. It may seem easier, but in the long run it’s actually harder. Courage (one of our universal principles) can solve a great many problems and help you avoid a lifetime of regret.

This is a very strategic workshop. We’re not going to cover a ton of low-level techniques and tactics. Instead we’re going to focus on getting the high-level parts of your life working congruently. I’d rather help you build your courage instead of giving you tips for dealing with the problems created by your own fears. I’d rather show you how to discern and accept the truth about your relationship situation instead of teaching you how to live with the consequences of denial. My goal is to help you become stronger and more conscious in all areas of your life, not to help you process mistakes faster.

When you get the high-level parts of your life working well, you won’t need to fuss with the tactical level so much. When you’re doing work you’re gushingly passionate about, procrastination is generally not a serious problem. When you have a relationship with someone who’s a wonderful match for you, you’re unlikely to suffer the same problems that someone with a shaky relationship has to deal with. When you adopt the mindset of abundance and let go of scarcity thinking, money tends to just flow. You’ll still need to deal with some low-level problems now and then, but when you get the high level aspects of your life handled, low-level problems will tend to be minor, infrequent, and easy to handle. If you’re drowning in low-level problems like unpaid bills, resentment toward your spouse, or dreadful boredom at your job, better tactics won’t help you much. You’re going to need help facing the real sources that gave rise to those problems.

This is a holistic workshop, not a surgical one. My role is to help you correct the misalignments in your thoughts, beliefs, and perspectives that are causing your most frustrating problems.

Complexity is the enemy of effectiveness. Working at the higher strategic level is actually simpler than working at the lower tactical level. It may seem harder at first glance because high-level solutions almost always involve facing your fears, but in this workshop you’ll learn how to push through the illusion of fear instead of running from it.

Think about those times when you experienced your greatest a-ha breakthroughs. You probably didn’t get all worked up about a new productivity tip you discovered. Your biggest breakthroughs involve high-level perspective shifts. Suddenly you see the big picture from a new angle, and that change automatically trickles down to the lower level. For example, it suddenly dawns on you that you’re in a dead-end relationship, and you break up the following day and never look back. Or you finally push through a fear that’s been holding you back for years, and you feel such power and certainty coursing through you as you take action. Those are the kinds of shifts I want to help you experience in this workshop.

Pricing

The price for the Conscious Growth Workshop is $497 USD per person until midnight on August 31st, 2009, and $597 USD thereafter.

Why a Live Workshop?

Why am I doing a live public workshop after years of blogging and podcasting? Why now?

I could tell you that my main motivation for putting on this workshop is to do a better job of helping people grow, but that wouldn’t be the truth. I wholeheartedly agree that a live workshop is a great venue for creating breakthrough changes. It’s certainly much more immersive than a blog or podcast, and I’ve personally gained more from attending live events than I have from reading books or watching DVDs. Providing a more valuable and immersive experience is certainly one reason I decided to do this, but I can’t say it’s the #1 reason.

The main reason I decided to do a live workshop is that I feel it’s a better way to express who I am and to connect with the people I serve.

I’ve been blogging about conscious growth for many years now, and my business has been very successful. I get lots of positive feedback every day. I have a family I love and great friends. I live in a beautiful million-dollar home and have all the stuff I could want or need. And there’s no end in sight.

That might sound like a wonderful place to be, but the truth is that life has become a little too easy for me. I’ve written and posted about two million words of free content. That’s enough to fill about two dozen books. It would probably take you weeks just to read all the free material I’ve posted on this site, a lifetime to apply it. I can see that doing more of the same isn’t the path with a heart… not really.

I still enjoy writing articles, but by itself that kind of work doesn’t inspire me enough. I feel a strong desire to work with people face-to-face, to look into their eyes and get a sense of their hopes and dreams, and to help them overcome real challenges they’re facing. Even if it means working with fewer people than I can reach online, I know I can have a much deeper impact on people in person than I can via the Internet or over the phone.

I enjoy a greater sense of connectedness when I communicate with people face-to-face instead of sitting in front of my computer. I’d rather work with people in person as opposed to sitting at my desk all day. I’d rather share a heartfelt hug than receive a thousand complimentary emails. I think I’ve processed enough email to last a lifetime. I’m ready to move on to something more exciting.

Fortunately I believe that my reasons for doing a workshop are well-aligned with the needs and desires of those who’d wish to attend. You want to achieve new breakthroughs in your life, and I want to help you get there and to see that amazing a-ha look in your eyes. We both win.

I realize that telling you the truth about why I’m doing this workshop probably violates every known rule of Internet marketing. According to the marketing experts, I’m supposed to get you emotionally hyped about the benefits you’ll receive, promise you worthless bonuses, and assign fake prices to them. (Register now and get this lame PDF — a $47 value!!!) Then I’m supposed to raise your buying temperature with emotional trigger words. Seriously… if you’re the kind of person who’d succumb to such silliness while rejecting my preference to show you a bit more respect, you really shouldn’t attend this workshop anyway. If you’re going to attend, let it be because you really want to be there, not because I tricked you into buying a ticket.

Why Does It Cost $497?

This is where I’m supposed to convince you why $497 is such a great value. But the truth is that if you still have serious doubts about the value you’ll receive, you probably shouldn’t come. If the monstrous amount of free content on this website hasn’t helped you at all, I dare say you’d be wasting your time at this workshop. On the other hand, if you’ve found my free content and/or my book valuable, it’s extremely likely you’ll find this workshop even more beneficial.

I know that some people react with skepticism and suspicion to anything that has a price tag. If you’re that kind of person, please don’t register. If I’m going to provide the best value I can, I think it’s reasonable to receive fair value in return, and the most practical medium we have for exchanging value right now is money. It’s not perfect, but it’s what I’ve decided to use for now.

I considered a number of different prices for this workshop ranging from $300 to $2000. Quite honestly I picked $497 because it just felt right to me. I ran it by some people I trust, and they all agreed it was a fair price too. I wanted a price that was low enough to be affordable to people who really wanted to be there while also being high enough to discourage casual attendees who are only interested in shallow quick fixes.

The price tag also serves as a gatekeeper. The people who will benefit most from this workshop shouldn’t have a problem affording it. As far as multi-day workshops go, this one is on the inexpensive side. People who think that the price is too much to pay for a personal growth seminar probably shouldn’t be there anyway. I set the price partly to filter those people out.

In the past I’ve done free presentations, and I’ve also done workshops for people who paid to be there. Without a doubt the paid presentations were much more productive. Attendees took it more seriously. They paid better attention. They asked more intelligent questions. They went out and applied the ideas afterwards. And they got results. When there’s little or no buy-in, attendees don’t have as much incentive to stay present and accountable for doing their part.

I have absolutely no problem helping out casual visitors via the Internet because it doesn’t cost me much to do so. Computers handle virtually all of the work, and the incremental cost of having an extra person visit my website is negligible. Moreover, it doesn’t cost the other person anything to soak up all that free material. That’s a nice win-win arrangement, and I’m happy to keep it going. But a live event is different. For starters I’m incurring thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket costs to put on this workshop. It involves many weeks of serious effort on my part. People will be flying in from out of town to attend (probably some from out the country). Consequently, I want to make sure we attract a strong and committed group of people who really want to be there, so we can justify all the time and energy that’s required.

If you truly can’t afford the workshop, I invite you to take advantage of the numerous free articles and podcasts on this website. If attendance is strong, I’ll likely do this workshop multiple times, so you may have the opportunity to attend at some future date when your finances improve. If you’re going to register, make sure it won’t be a serious financial burden for you. Feel free to intend and manifest the registration price if that feels right to you, but please don’t go into debt to be there.

Why does the price increase after August 31st? This is for planning purposes. I want to have a reasonable idea of the number of attendees well before the workshop dates. I expect that most people who are going to attend will take the $100 discount and register early. If we sell out early, I may be able to move us to a larger room and make more seats available. I also need sufficient lead time for printing workbooks. The closer we get to the date, the more limited our options become, and I’d like to have as much flexibility as possible.

I can’t predict how many people will come to Las Vegas for this workshop, but it’s possible we could sell out early. If you really want to attend, please don’t wait until the last minute to register.

Why Las Vegas?

Because it’s the most awesome city on earth!

Seriously, I’m hosting the Conscious Growth Workshop in Las Vegas mainly because I live here. The workshop venue is about 20 minutes from my house.

Harrah’s Hotel is about 10 minutes by car from the Las Vegas Airport (LAS). There are many direct flights here, and flying in and out of Vegas is often less expensive than other cities, so you may be able to get a good deal on a plane ticket.

Hotel rooms in the city are relatively inexpensive. If you stay at Harrah’s, it will probably cost you $100-140 per night for a standard room. If you stay next door at the Imperial Palace, I think it’s only $59 per night there.

Since the workshop ends at 5pm each day (3:30pm on Sunday), you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy Las Vegas if you so desire. There are many great shows to see and lots to do within easy walking distance. We’re across the street from Caesar’s Palace and the Mirage, and we’re in easy walking distance from the Flamingo, the Venetian, Treasure Island, the Bellagio, and lots more cool places to check out. Just go light on the free drinks — don’t drag yourself into the workshop each morning with a hangover!

Registration

If you think the Conscious Growth Workshop will be of benefit to you, then please sign up now. I don’t know how likely it is that we’ll sell out, but I don’t recommend waiting until the last minute if you’re committed to going. I may repeat this workshop at a later date, but that won’t be until 2010 at the earliest.

This may not be an easy workshop for you to participate in. It will take some courage to face the parts of your life that I’m going to ask you to face. No part of your life will be exempt from examination. You’ll be challenged to take a hard look at your career decisions, your financial life, your relationship situation, your health practices, your habits and daily routine, your spiritual beliefs, and more. In some cases you may not like what you see. It may be difficult to accept the changes that must be made. You may be pushed well beyond your comfort zone.

Only you can decide if this is something that will be worthwhile for you. I can’t make that decision for you. Is the path you’re on now working well for you? Are you content with the patterns you’ve settled into? Or do you feel ready to take your life to a new level? Is it time to stimulate some new growth experiences? You decide. Do you see yourself in Las Vegas attending this workshop? If it feels right to you, go ahead and sign up.

In 2006, 23 million people stood up, in 2007 47 million people, last year 116 million people Stood Up and Took Action. Let’s break the record again this year and send a louder message than ever – achieve the Millennium Developments

Why Stand Up and Take Action in 2009?
For the fourth year in a row, millions of people around the world will Stand Up and Take Action to show their support for the fight against poverty and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This year Stand Up will take place against the backdrop of a deepening financial crisis and a slowing global economy. It is a time of great challenge for development in general and the MDGs in particular. Already we are seeing the potentially devastating impact of this on the world’s poorest and most vulnerable. We know that the current economic climate threatens to undo and possibly even reverse the very significant gains that have been made towards achieving the MDGs. With just six years left to the 2015 deadline for the achievement of the Goals, we cannot afford to let this happen. The achievement of the MDGs must remain a priority on the global political and public agenda. In this environment, Stand Up is a vital opportunity to send a clear and urgent message to world leaders and decision makers and raise the political stakes. Our policy messages and actions must reflect the urgency of the situation and must be an instrument to convey the sense of our growing impatience and intolerance of excuses for and distractions from the implementation of policies and programmes that address the poorest and most vulnerable.
When
October 16th, 17th, 18th, 2009: From 12 a.m. GMT (relevant local time) on the 16th October to 11.39 p.m. GMT (relevant local time) on the 18th October
Where
Wherever people who want to be involved in the fight against poverty and support the achievement of the MDGs are.
What
Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now! A three day mobilization to send a loud and clear message from citizens to leaders of rich and poor countries to take urgent action to achieve the MDGs. And once again break the Guinness World Record. Participants will need to register their event at www.standagainstpoverty.org before the start of the mobilization and then to report their numbers after they have taken part. Numbers will be counted and verified by Guinness World Records.
Umbrella Logo and Slogan
The Stand Up, Take Action component of the logo will remain the same as last year. The second line slogan will be replaced with a more urgent and demanding call to “end poverty now!”

Thematic Focus
This year Stand Up will once again provide an energetic, high impact platform for people to raise the profile of MDG- related issues relevant to their region, country or community. However, this year Stand Up will begin on October 16th, World Food Day, and on this one day the focus on food security and on hunger will be greater. As always, the policy demands will be determined at the national and local levels by participants. But in recognition of the fact that many of the MDGs directly linked to the status of women are not doing well, campaigners are encouraged to give this year’s Stand Up a clear focus on holding governments accountable for improving the status of women and their rights. This might range from a focus on improving maternal mortality or hunger and nutritional status for women and girls in poor countries. In rich countries this could be adapted to demanding urgent reform of trade-distorting agricultural subsidies.
Stand Up: Wherever you are. Alone, in a group or as part of an organization, choose a moment in these three days to physically and intentionally Stand Up and Take Action.
Take Action: Standing Up is the first step in any process of action. It is the signal of intent to actively engage.
Strengthening Actions to Achieve Maximum Policy Impact
This year the intention is to significantly strengthen the action component of the mobilization. It is for the participants and partners in each context to determine the actions that will be most effective to hold governments accountable for the realisation of the MDGs. It is essential that there is a direct link between the actions and the MDG-related policy demands that are being made. A major focus of this year’s Stand Up will be to target Parliamentarians/legislators at the Federal (and where appropriate) at the provincial level. This could include early planning to persuade Parliamentarians to Stand Up in the house, to organize a Parliamentary debate and to pass necessary laws and policies for the achievement of the MDGs. Writing to Parliamentarians through letters, emails or text messages in large numbers can make a difference.
Top line Messages to leaders and policy makers
• Time is running out, urgent and decisive implementation of MDG-related policies, budgets and programmes cannot wait any longer
• Do not use the financial crisis as an excuse for ignoring and reneging on your commitments to the MDGs, we, the citizens of your own countries will not stand for it. The poor didn’t cause this crisis; they can’t be allowed to suffer for it.
• Do not believe that internal domestic challenges such as job losses, financial instability and insecurity will drive societies inwards. Despite these domestic challenges, it is clear now more than ever, that we live in an interdependent world and that we need to find global solutions to revert the current scenario. This is why we are even more ready to Stand Up and demand that promises made to end poverty and inequality are kept, for us and for everyone.

The Pledge
This year r the pledge will be a more integral and central part of Stand UP. We will encourage everyone who takes part to include the reading of the pledge. A copy of the pledge with two sections, one which will be determined globally, which can be read out at all levels, will be made available online and through direct dissemination. The other will be adapted in each context. Participants are encouraged to adapt, revise and translate the second part of the pledge to serve their needs.
Read the Stand Up pledge when you stand up. Wherever possible record the reading of the pledge on video, audio tape recorder or with a photograph and send these to us. Send us your updated pledge so we can post it online.

Materials and advertising campaigns
Materials for Stand Up, Take Action will be designed and disseminated by regional and national Campaigns within their own relevant design parameters. The prescribed components of the materials will be:
Stand Up, Take Action Logo
Red, black and white color theme
A set of global materials will also and made available for adaptation should anyone wish to utilize these.
Partners and campaigners at the national and local levels will also generate their own appropriate advertising and promotional campaigns for Stand Up. An online promotional campaign will be generated at the global level.
Useful materials to consider include:
1. Promotional brochure: Outlining exactly how to take part in Stand Up, how to register beforehand and how to record your numbers. This will be designed and produced by national Campaigns
2. Event in a Box: This will be generated globally and will include logo designs and translations, collateral designs, banners, a template press release and messaging, designs for T-shirts, caps and banners and the pledge. Any other suggestions of materials or collateral for inclusion in the Event in a Box are welcome.
3. National policy demands outlined and disseminated as a one pager to be generated at national level
4. An internal resource for UN Millennium Campaign, GCAP and other key partners involved in counting will be produced with guidelines for counting, spread sheeting and submitting numbers
All of these materials and collateral will also be available for download at: www.standagainstpoverty.org

High Visibility Events
Recognizing the need for a reinforced approach to Stand Up events which will further increase press and media interest, it has been decided that a number of solid, high-visibility events should be organized in each of the regions this year. These events will form the entry points and anchors for promoting Stand Up as a whole and attracting the attention of a wider spectrum of press and media coverage.
