Climate change is a global challenge that concerns young people as much as it concerns the older generation. Climate change already has an impact on the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, destroying livelihoods, exacerbating conflict and claiming lives.

Nowadays, we can no longer solve the climate challenge separately from each other, be it across nations, across religions, across sectors or across generations.

It is of the utmost  importance that we as the young generation have a real say in the climate debate and take action!

From 28 June – 1 July 2010, the Global Humanitarian Forum’s Youth Forum will host its second annual event. Youth Forum 2010 – Young Adults 4 New Results, entitled “Generations taking on the Climate Challenge”, will take place in Geneva, Switzerland.

Of course, as the second edition of the GHF’s Youth Forum centerpiece event, Youth Forum 2010 is going to be bigger, better, funnier, louder and crazier than last year!

Youth Forum 2010 will be held simultaneously and interlinked with the GHF’s high-level centerpiece event, the 2010 Forum. Consequently, attendees of Youth Forum 2010 will engage in dialogue and interact with GHF’s high-level participants.

During the four days of Youth Forum 2010, you will have a chance to:

Share your expertise, experience and knowledge with interesting young adults from all over the world
Engage in true intergenerational dialogue with high-level personalities from across global society
Participate in discussion rounds, plenary debates, workshops and brainstorming sessions
Listen to leading young guest speakers from various sectors
Develop new and action-oriented initiatives with the help of a high-tech idea development tool
Enjoy Geneva and its environment through our various social activities… and legendary parties!

We are looking for young people from many different backgrounds! It does not matter if you are a scientist, a musician, a politician or a cook, a young professional or a student. If you are interested in the overarching topic of the event, then we are looking for you!

150 committed and active international young adults between the ages of 18-30 will be selected as participants through an entry-competition that opened on 1 February 2010. The deadline to submit your application is 1 March 2010.

Day 1: For Software Developers February 18 Day 1 will focus on pushing the boundaries of web applications using Google developer technologies. Google engineers and web development leaders will lead you through one full day of in-depth sessions on the latest Google technologies and hands-on codelabs. The day will also be about bringing brilliant developers together to share their own ideas. There will be plenty of time to meet other developers, discuss ideas and share what you’ve been working on. Day 2: For Marketing Professionals and Entrepreneurs February 19 Day 2 will be full of Google product demonstrations for businesses to help spur innovation and entrepreneurship in the region. We will discuss how to create local content using online tools, how to market them and how to monetize. Furthermore we will discuss several tools to better manage your business. In addition, we have invited several venture capitalists from around the world to talk about raising capital for your business. Day 3: For Computer Science Students February 20 Day 3 will basically contain shorter versions of Day 1 presentations and include a session with venture capitalists. We will also cover some of the existing Google student outreach programs and opportunities.

As part of efforts to strenghten and deepen youth involvement and understanding of the vision2020, e-cube Foundation and the Youth development and Peace network is organising a 1 day National Youth Town Hall meeting on ‘Youth and Vision 2020’.

OBJECTIVE OF THE MEETING

The purpose of this meeting is to bring together youth leaders and stakeholders across Nigeria for a dialogue with the Minister of National Planning and the expert team from the National Planning Commission to present the Vision 2020 plan to the Nigerian youth and to also afford youth leaders the opportunity to ask questions, critique and develop a sense of ownership of the vision.

The meeting is scheduled to hold as follows:

• There is a buy-in into the vision2020 by youth leaders present
• Youth Leaders and the National Planning Commission agree on the need to further include young people in the implementation stage of the vision2020 plan.
• Nigerian Youth Leaders agree on the need to link or harmonise Nigeria’s new National Youth Policy with the Vision 2020 policy

Solidarity across Cultures: Working Together for Democracy

Objective: The Sixth Assembly will bring together a richly diverse group of participants representing every region of the world in the spirit of shared democratic values.  They will teach and learn from each other, build collaborative relationships, and thereby strengthen the World Movement as a network committed to mutual support, exchange, and cooperation.

General objectives of the Assembly include:

• providing participants with a forum to exchange practical, hands-on knowledge that they can use in the countries and regions in which they work;
• ensuring that the extent of repression exercised by regimes in closed societies will not pass unnoticed in the international community, and to devise new ways to enhance assistance to those inside those countries;
• directing attention to the needs of democrats in transitional and authoritarian countries;
• encouraging other established democracies, both old and new, to support democracy-promotion efforts; and
• exploring ways in which participants can use new information and communication technologies (ICTs) in their work.

Participants: The Sixth Assembly will bring together some 550 participants of various backgrounds and professions, including:

• NGO leaders working to strengthen human rights, government accountability, the rule of law, the status of women, and minority inclusion;
• business leaders committed to economic reform and transparent corporate governance;
• political party representatives seeking to make parties effective vehicles for linking citizens with democratic decision makers;
• trade unionists committed to giving workers a democratic voice in the global economy;
• leaders of research institutes and scholars advancing ideas and concrete initiatives for democratic reforms;
• civic educators promoting the values, skills, and knowledge that form the basis for a free and participatory society;
• independent journalists, broadcasters and other communications specialists educating democracy activists on the role of independent media in democratic systems;
• representatives of democracy assistance foundations and government development agencies; and
• knowledgeable individuals who can share practical experiences on how to utilize new information and communication technologies (ICTs) in democracy-promotion work.

Agenda: To help ensure that it will be as focused as possible on the practical ways that democrats can advance their work and mutually support each other, the Sixth Assembly will mainly be composed of discussion workshops to maximize opportunities for participation and exchange.  There will be no declarations or policy resolutions issued by the Assembly.  A “Democracy Fair” will feature an exhibition area, technology training center, and video screening room, as well as space in which participants can educate each other about their respective causes and generate support for them.  The last night of the Assembly will feature the presentation of the World Movement’s Democracy Courage Tributes to groups and movements, selected by the Steering Committee, who have demonstrated extraordinary courage in the pursuit of democracy and human rights.

What is it? The SYNC programme is a formal work/study mentoring programme that attaches young undergraduates to mentors for specifically defined periods- usually 6-8weeks. During this period, your mentor will pay you a monthly salary in exchange for you to perform daily tasks for him/ her. Tasks are as varied as your talent, and at the end of the day, your abilities would ensure when you leave school, you have exceptional references to fall back on!

Who is it for? Vibrant, positive, ambitious young persons seeking an opportunity for personal development, and who are in tertiary education. This means if you are studying in any higher institution in Lagos (university, polytechnic, college of education, computer college etc) and you are between ages 19-25, you are eligible.

Any Fees? There are NO hidden or apparent costs to participate in this programme. There are NO entry fees, application fees, course orientation fees, or attachment fees. Instead, we urge our partners to pay a minimum remuneration of at least =N=10,000 to all participants. Attend the Programme Workshop
The workshop is a full day formal mentoring event where selected participants at this years SYNC Programme as well as interested young people interact with mentors drawn from every sector of the Nigerian economy. The theme of this year’s workshop is ‘Teach me to Earn, help me Learn’.

This year, the event will take place at the Airforce Officers Mess, Victoria Island, Lagos on Saturday 5th September 2009 from 10am- 2pm. So far, 45 mentors have signed up and look forward to the opportunity to interact with young people. Positive Action for Treatment Access (PATA) is a non-governmental organisation working to ensure that every individual has access to treatment education and can access qualitative, affordable, ethical and humane treatment which will empower them take charge of their health and lives.

PATA is embarking on a project to train,mentor and technically support young women living with HIV to become Treatment Advocates.

To achieve this,PATA calls for applications from young women living with HIV to participate in a one year treatment literacy programme which will include a five day capacity residential building workshop in Lagos and a Site visit to a HIV Treatment Centre.

The five day residential workshop will be followed by a one month Internship period during which the young women will be expected to identify and conduct step down treatment education sessions for a minimum of three support groups including an HIV clinic in their
community.

The training is open to young Nigerian women living with HIV aged 18-29 committed to developing their leadership and advocacy skills.

The young women must meet the following criteria:
- Good command of spoken and written English
- Ability to communicate properly in relevant native dialect
- Ability to meet deadlines, and work under pressure
- Capacity to take initiative and work with minimal supervision
