Nigeria’s award winning television producer and talk show host Funmi Iyanda returns to the silver screen with her highly anticipated television show Talk With Funmi. This groundbreaking television program will premiere exclusively on DSTV’s Africa Magic on Sunday February 7th, 2010 at 7pm.

Talk With Funmi is an exciting new television show that captures people and conversations around Nigeria. It is a thought provoking, illuminating and entertaining journey into the life of Nigerians from all over the country.

Get ready to embark on an exciting journey around Nigeria with Funmi Iyanda as she journeys from state to state talking with Nigerians from all spheres of life. Talk With Funmi captures discussions that range from the hard hitting stories of our time to the every day challenges of Nigerian life with some light-hearted banter and fun along the way.

The show talks to people everywhere, from ordinary citizens going about their business to celebrities in unusual but natural settings. Join Funmi as she spends the day with Charlie Boy and Lagos Okada riders and goes hunting in the forests of Ondo. Watch her dance galala in Ajegunle and play football with Governor Fashola and the All Stars. Experience the people and places of Nigeria in a way you’ve never seen them before.

Speaking about her inspiration for the show, Funmi Iyanda said “I wanted to create a platform where authentic Nigerian stories told by Nigerians could be heard. Nobody can tell our stories the way we can. We need to be ourselves, and tell our stories with honesty, creative artistry, intelligence and humour.”

And for her, Nigeria’s move towards its fiftieth independence anniversary is the perfect opportunity to capture vibrant Nigerian stories and engage the people in transformative conversations—conversations that could ignite meaningful change.

Talk With Funmi has also been shot and produced to international broadcast standards on high definition video, from a production team led by UK based award-winning director Chris Dada. The result is groundbreaking and innovative television that is an artistic blend of documentary, reality television and talk show.

Join Talk With Funmi each week on DSTV’s Africa Magic on Sunday at 7pm and embark on a journey that promises to be fresh, eye opening and fun.

Talk With Funmi is an Ignite Media production.

Climate change is a global challenge that concerns young people as much as it concerns the older generation. Climate change already has an impact on the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, destroying livelihoods, exacerbating conflict and claiming lives.

Nowadays, we can no longer solve the climate challenge separately from each other, be it across nations, across religions, across sectors or across generations.

It is of the utmost importance that we as the young generation have a real say in the climate debate and take action!

From 28 June – 1 July 2010, the Global Humanitarian Forum’s Youth Forum will host its second annual event. Youth Forum 2010 – Young Adults 4 New Results, entitled “Generations taking on the Climate Challenge”, will take place in Geneva, Switzerland.

Of course, as the second edition of the GHF’s Youth Forum centerpiece event, Youth Forum 2010 is going to be bigger, better, funnier, louder and crazier than last year!

Youth Forum 2010 will be held simultaneously and interlinked with the GHF’s high-level centerpiece event, the 2010 Forum. Consequently, attendees of Youth Forum 2010 will engage in dialogue and interact with GHF’s high-level participants.

During the four days of Youth Forum 2010, you will have a chance to:

Organiser: Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies,

University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria

Proposed Date: 19-21 April, 2010

Even though there is panoply of information on the history and the spread of the religion of Islam in Nigeria and even though the of the religion in the socio-economic and political development of Nigeria has been recognized and applauded and knowledge and information about the roles and contributions of the Muslims to the weal and woe of Nigeria since independence, however, are hard to come by. The need is equally felt for an Inside- and Outside-In critical appraisal of the destiny, fortune and “futures” of Islam and Nigerian Muslims as the country begins its march to its centenary. How does it feel to be a Nigerian and a Muslim? What do these categories imply with reference to the idea of Nigeria and of what impacts have they been to the country since 1960? How do Muslims in post-independence Nigeria view the public sphere? To what extent is their idea of the sphere a reflection of Islam’s theologico-jurisprudential constructs or the Western conception of same? How and where might we begin to “locate” Muslims in Nigeria ’s public sphere particularly since the country attained flag independence from the British in 1960 and of what value has been their participation in it? How might a study of Islam and the Muslim’s role in Nigeria ’s public sphere since 1960 positively impact the larger Nigerian society? What are the fissures, contradictions and paradoxes that could be observed in-between Islam in the text and Islam in context in Nigeria ? How have Islamic practices in Nigeria reinforced the argument for the separation between or the union of the state and religion? What is the fact or fiction of the Muslims’ majority/minority status in Nigeria ’s demographic, political, economic and intellectual/educational space and of what effect has that been on the Nigerian state since 1960? How might Nigerian Muslims evolve a more constructive nexus between Islamic theory and the existential realities of Nigeria ’s public sphere?

How do trends within Islam in Nigeria in the contemporary period reflect the socio-cultural and econo-political global flows and how has the latter, in turn, become impacted by the former since independence?

Theme

The Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies invites papers on any of the following sub-themes or on any other theme that may fall within the general concept of the conference:

Course Description

This course is designed to prompt an exploration of common behaviours and attitudes towards gender differences. It will present facts and figures about the situation of women and men in our society today – and references from key documents that highlight policies formulated to address gender concerns. Recent events have shown that if governments are serious about achieving the Millennium Development Goals, MDG’s, it is essential that gender be taken into account for all the goals. Gender equality in the MDGs touches almost exclusively on the area of education, and research does show the importance of equality in this area, but this is not sufficient. This e-learning course will empower the participants with tools and sector-specific guidelines for gender mainstreaming in their various institutions and development planning. It will further improve the abilities of participants to reduce gender inequalities in their various homes, organisation and communities.

The course also features a number of exercises and reflective activities designed to explore basic gender concepts and enhance gender analysis skills, which can be applied in the formulation of policies, the design of programmes, and the exercise of evaluation.

BENEFITS

The overall purpose of the training programme is to enhance the gender-responsive planning of key institutions and the management skills of their employees, so that they can more effectively play their part in implementing gender-sensitive development policies as well as mainstreaming gender in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, MDG’s.

COST

Course fees include access to all course materials, expert support, assignments as well as postage and packaging of a certificate. There is a limited amount of partial scholarships available for applicants from developing countries, based on financial need. Developing countries means as defined by the World Bank and UNDP classifications.

LOCATION: Online

Total Duration: 5 Weeks, approximately 25 hours learning time

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

The deadline for application is 2nd February 2010. While full tuition payment is due on 5th February 2010. However, applications will be accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis. Applications received after this deadline will not be considered.
