May 6th – 16th 2009

TO BE ORGANISED BY TAIWO ADEWOLE AND ASSOCIATES, MERIDIAN INTERNATIONAL CENTER IN PARTNERSHIP WITH:

Climate Change presents one of the greatest threats to human security and sustainable affluence in the 21st century. This is why American Chemical Society reported in June 1st 1999 contained in (Volume 33, Issue 11 / p. 239 A), that the number of cities that can claim this distinction has increased from 5 in 1975 to 14 in 1995. It is expected to reach 26 cities by 2015; the majority of this increase is expected to occur in less developed regions of the world and at a faster pace. Lagos, Dhaka and Bangladesh are growing 10 times faster than New York, N.Y. and Los Angeles, and California.

The Effects of Climate Change are mounting up with enormous challenges on Mega-Cities with consequent social polarization urban sprawl, overcrowding, traffic rising, energy consumption, inadequate water supply and deficient effluent treatment These problems are particularly serious in the developing world. Without improving the conditions of the poor and involving citizens and key strategic policy makers in future development based on collaborative and partnership will no solution to sustainable mega cities can be in sight Nigeria has conceptualized Mega-Cities Lagos, Kano, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Plateau, Calabar and Enugu and has taken giant steps in addressing the progressing Urbanization, social dislocation and ecological problems of these cities Other key necessities of life such as Sustainable Clean Water (SCW), Sanitation (through sustainable waste management) and housing problems is causing an alarming outburst in this Mega-Cities and will threaten the achievement of the MDG’s by 2015 in Nigeria.
